Over the past several years, Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg has been replacing the old climate control units in the common areas with new, more efficient equipment. The contracts have included anywhere from four to eight units per year.
Sounds simple enough, but remember, this is not a school that closes for several months out of the year to allow for maintenance work and upgrades. This is one of the country's largest and busiest shopping malls open virtually every day of the year and surrounded by a seemingly endless parking lot.
Woodfield's 2009 contract, awarded to OMS, involved exchanging and upgrading nine units and adding one additional unit. This was a challenging lift because the location of the units prevented using a crane for the lift. Each unit weighed approximately 5,400 pounds, and units of this size require a large helicopter to be set into place. Our window of opportunity to lift nine units off the roof and set ten units in place was a Sunday morning from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Fortunately, the weather was on our side and our crew performed spectacularly, completing the lift by 9:00 a.m. and allowing the mall to open on time and ensure comfort for their thousands of shoppers.
